The Rougemount Neighbourhood is bounded by the Rouge River to the west, the Canadian National rail line to the north, Petticoat Creek to the east, and Highway 401 to the south. The total area of the neighbourhood is 1.84 square kilometres, and includes a portion of the Rouge National Urban Park, covering the valley lands along the Little Rouge Creek. Initially, residential development began in the area around Rougemount Drive between 1900 and 1940. During the 1970’s, subdivisions were constructed on the west side of Altona Road, and in the 1990’s, apartments and townhouses were built along the north side of Kingston Road. Housing in the neighbourhood is primarily detached dwellings on large lots. There are opportunities for redevelopment along Kingston Road to occur in the long term as part of the City’s plans to intensify the Kingston Road corridor to redevelop into a higher density, mixed-use, pedestrian and transit oriented community. Currently, the Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit operates along Kingston Road which will eventually be enhanced with dedicated transit and pedestrian infrastructure.

Rougemount includes: two elementary schools; a neighbourhood park; and a place of worship. The neighbourhood is served by commercial plazas, restaurants, financial institutions, offices, and a number of child learning centres, located on the southern edge, along Kingston Road.

Altona Road is the main north/south collector route through this neighbourhood, connecting Sheppard Avenue to Kingston Road. The Rougemount Drive overpass provides a connection between this neighbourhood and Rosebank neighbourhood, located south of Highway 401.

The Rouge National Urban Park and Petticoat Creek are key elements of the Rougemount neighbourhood and the City’s Natural Heritage System. These features are a habitat for flora and fauna, a valuable resource for relaxation, exercise, education and meditation, complemented by scenic walking and biking paths and trails, various fishing and picnic spots, bird watching lookouts, and seating benches.
